Biography: Shruti Haasan is a renowned Indian film actress, music composer and singer in the Bollywood as well as in the South Indian film industry. She was born in the city of Chennai on the 20th of January in the year 1986 to the renowned Kamal Haasan and Sarika Thakur. Akshara, her younger sister is a national Indian representative for Ballroom Latin dancing. She received her education from the prestigious Abacus school situated in Chennai and later on she went to Mumbai in order to learn psychology from St. Andrew’s College.

Eventually she turned her focus towards the field of music as well as film and she had even undergone a training at the Musician’s Institute, situated in California, USA. During her film career, once she even had to do plastic surgery on her nose.

Shruti’s very first song was in the Kamal Haasan produced ‘Thevar Magan’ under the famous composer Ilaiyaraaja. She was around six years old when she accomplished this feat. During her school days, Shruti mad her singing debut in her father’s film, ‘Chachi 420’. Here she sang a duet along with her father. She had even sang the bilingual versions of ‘Rama Rama’ in Hindi as well as in Tamil (for the film called ‘Hey Ram’). Shruti Haasan also worked with the experienced singer K. J. Yesudas for the 2002 movie ‘En Mana Vaanil’. She released her debut album in the year 2009 through which she proved to be a composer, a singer as well as a song writer. Her very first Tamil music composition was in the 2009 drama thriller ‘Unnaipol Oruvan’, directed by Chakri Toleti. Later on she even lent her voice in a song from the Soham Shah directed ‘Luck’. Shruti Haasan had even joined hands with Dave Kushner for Jennifer Chambers Lynch’s ‘Hisss’. Here, while Dave was in charge of composing the tracks, Shruti had the responsibility of writing the lyrics. Shruti had also sung a song in ‘Hisss’ and had appeared in one of the film’s promotional videos.

In the year 2000, Shruti starred in the Kamal Haasan directed bilingual flick ‘Hey Ram’. This film was based on the murder attempt of the Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi. In the film, Shruti enacted the role of Vallabhbhai Patel’s daughter. Early in her career, Shruti Haasan had rejected various film offers, most importantly the lead role in ‘Saroja’, directed by Venkat Prabhu. Later on in the year 2007 reports had suggested that Shruti would be making her debut as a lead heroine in a film by Nishikanth Kamat. Eventually she had signed up for this film which was given the title of ‘Endrendrum Punnagai’. However the project was stalled just before production.

She eventually appeared in Soham Shah’s action thriller flick ‘Luck’ starring Mithun Chakraborty, Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, Ravi Kishan, Rati Agnihotri, Chitrashi Rawat, Danny Dezongpa and Shruti herself. Imran Khan was Shruti’s childhood friend and he had recommended her name to Sohan Shah and eventually Shruti signed up for this film after going through the film’s script. In the sets of the film, Shruti had played an active role in executing various action sequences and she also had to get her body toned for a bikini scene in the film. However the film did not do well at the box office with critics making statements that Shruti deserved a better launch. Next up Shruti appeared along with Blaaze in the promotional videos for the films ‘Eenadu’ and ‘Unnaipol Oruvan’.

In the month of January in 2011, she appeared in her very first Telegu film titled ‘Anaganaga O Dheerudu’. This film was directed by K. Raghavendra Rao’s son Prakash Kovelamudi, and it had Siddharth, Lakshmi Manchu, Harshita and Shruti herself in the cast crew. This movie which was co-produced by the famous Walt Disney Pictures depicts Shruti playing the role of a gypsy woman. Although the film failed to create much of an impact the box office, yet Shruti received a lot of potive remarks for her performance in the film. Next up she signed up for Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji’ where she played an extended cameo alongside the film’s cast which included Emraan Hashmi, Shazahn Padamsee and Ajay Devgan. In ‘Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji’, Shruti played the character role of Nikki Narang, a former Miss India model’s step daughter. Although the film was a commercial success yet Shruti did not get much positive feedback from the critics for her role in the film. In the mid of 2010, Shruti was signed up by the director A. R. Murugadoss for his film ‘7aum Arivu’, starring Shruti along with Suriya and Johnny Tri Nguyen. Here Shruti donned the role of a young scientist by the name of Subha Srinivasan who had the hope of reactivating the genes of Bodhidharma, the 5th century Buddhist monk. Her performance in the film was again well received by the critics as well as the rest of the viewers. Next up she starred in Venu Sriram’s Telegu musical film ‘Oh My Friend’, starring Siddharth, Hansika Motwani, Ali, Navdeep, Tanikella Bharani. Shruti had to learn Kuchipudi dance as it was required for her role in the film. This film received average reviews from the critics.

In the year 2012, Shruti appeared in Aishwariya Dhanush’s Tamil romantic psychological thriller flick ‘3’, starring Dhanush and Shruti. Here she played the character role of Janani. This film got a lot of recognition even before its release due to the collaboration of Aishwariya and Shruti, the two being the daughters of 2 eminent Tamil actors, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. Another reason for this pre-release hype was the success of one of the songs of the film, ‘Why This Kolaveri Di?’. The very same year, she starred in Harish Shankar’s ‘Gabbar Singh’ which was a remake of ‘Dabangg’, the commercial blockbuster of 2010. Shruti had signed up for this film in the month of November in 2011 and she enacted the role of a village girl by the name of Bhagyalakshmi. This film created a huge impact at the box office and this led to Shruti receiving much more film offers. Next up she appeared in the Telegu flick ‘Balupa’, directed by Gopichand Malineni and starring Ravi Teja, Adivi Shesh and Anjali. One of her upcoming films is the Vamsi Paidipally directed ‘Yevadu’, starring Kajal Aggarwal, Amy Jackson, Allu Arjun and Ram Charan Teja. This film is set to release on the 25th of July, 2013. Other upcoming releases of Shruti include ‘Gabbar Singh 2’, ‘Race Gurram’, ‘Balupu’ and ‘Ramaiya Vasthavayya.
